    National Council of Women of Finland

    Work for equality since 1911

    The National Council of Women of Finland is the umbrella organization of women’s organizations in Finland, and the Finnish member of the International Council of Women (ICW, est. 1888). The purpose of the National Council of Women is to promote human rights, particularly equality and the position of women, taking into account the benefit to society, family, and the individual.

    The goal of the National Council of Women is to increase women’s share in public decision making and to make visible the work of women and women’s organizations. The Council functions as a connecting link, coordinator, and discussion forum of its member organizations.

    In order to reach these goals, it is necessary to participate in preparatory decision making, to construct and maintain networks, to take initiative, and to be able to work in unity. Unity is created as participants bind themselves to the goals jointly agreed upon.

    The Council is governed by its Board, which consists of a president, two vice presidents, and ten members. Four members’ terms expire each year. The Board meets 8 to 10 times annually. The executive committee manages the current matters.

    Two conferences are held annually for the presidents and general secretaries of the member organizations, as well as a training session for the salaried personnel of member organizations.

    The points of emphasis in the activity of the Council of Women up to 2005 are:

  • securing financing for women’s organizations

  • making visible the work of women and women’s organizations

  • national follow-up and supervision of the Peking +5 process

  • constructing networks of women’s organizations

  • increasing the proportion of women’s share in all decision making

  • developing the viewpoint of equality in legislation

  • increasing resources in work towards equality

  • increasing consciousness regarding equality and women

  • supporting equality research and distributing information about it

  • international networking and distribution of its results to member organizations

    The National Council of Women of Finland (founded in 1911) is a member of the International Council of Women (ICW) which was founded in 1888. The National Council is represented on the Board of the ICW by Laura Finne-Elonen until general assembly in Johannesburg in October 2009.
